Lion and Sun - Seljuks of Rum - Hand Set in 18k Gold

$470.00
Sold Out - Please email info@peregrinpendants.com to inquire about a similar pendant.

I see others offering ancient coin jewelry, but I have yet to find any other seller that sells this beauty. I set this in a prong setting to accentuate the gorgeous edges of the coin and to accommodate for how thin it is.

To appreciate its size, the relief of the coin and the shape of the bail, see the picture showing the coin next to a US quarter (coming soon). The coin was first set in a gold bezel, which was then hammered over the edge of both sides. This was then sanded and polished. This pendant is built to last.

Authentic Coin - Set in 18k gold. The coin measures about 22 mm in width and 25 mm top to bottom (see picture with a US quarter for scale). I bought this coin from a premier British coin dealer.

Seljuks of Rum, Silver Dirhem Ghiyah ad-Din Kay Khusraw II

Obverse: Lion advancing right with personification of the sun above with crescent on left, three stars around

Reverse: Name and title in four lines with mint and date in margins

Mint: 1236 - 1246 AD

The Sultanate of Rum or Rum Seljuk Sultanate was a Turko-Persian Sunni Muslim ruled state, established over conquered Byzantine territories and peoples (Rûm) of Anatolia by the Seljuk Turks following their entry into Anatolia after the Battle of Manzikert (1071 AD). The most interesting of all Seljuk dirhems are those of Kai-Khusru II. This sultan was madly in love with his beautiful Georgian wife, and he wanted to put her portrait on his coins; but, this not being approved of by his advisers, he put his wife’s horoscope on his coins instead - the Sun in Leo. Or so the story goes.
